elvis update

ok, i dunno if i necessarily expect anyone here to really care about this, but some of your responses have got me to thinking a little.

i mentioned before that my dislike of elvis could just be a personal bias. so i was thinking about that a little, & it seems this bias is just something i've held onto for long enough that i don't even remember the reason. i'm still not a fan, though i think i'll give him another chance.

but the bias, i'm thinking, is one of those things like where you get used to thinking you don't like someone & then you continue to not like them w/out any real reason. anyhow, yeah, i'll give him another listen. for that matter i'll even concede that there are a few songs of his that i like.

i still disagree w/his being titled the king of rock & roll. i know that's not his doing...that title might even be the entire basis of my bias against him...so...i guess it...um...might be possible...that...uh...i may've been...uuuummmmmmm...wrong.

well, I DO care about this. Not because I care what kind of music you do or do not like, or whether you end up liking Elvis or decide that you still don't even after giving him another chance.

What I do care about is that you are open-minded enough to hear others out, consider their opinions, admit you might have misjudged, and decide to re-evaluate. That takes a very big, and might I say, intelligent person.

    Bravo!!!

And really in the end, taste is so inexplicable. Like I said, I don't own any Elvis songs... but I do like some of them. And I appreciate and understand his place in rock history.

I also can't stand Herman Melville... yawn... but I do get that he's important in the field of literature.... etc etc etc

It's like with people even. You can't help who you are and aren not attracted to, and you can't even say why. Sometimes you reject a person who is amazing, everything anyone could want, for a loser with no job who treats you like a dog. You can't help if you are gay or straight either. You just ARE.

Total agreement with both of you! Except for that I LOVE Herman Melville! :)

"Oh, Ahab! what shall be grand in thee, it must needs be plucked at from the skies, and dived for in the deep, and featured in the unbodied air! "
        -- favorite Melville quote

I also like Elvis' Mystery Train a whole lot. But I'm not too familiar with the rest of his catalog. I've often had a distaste for Elvis too, but I think it has more to do with the stereotype of his fans than his actual music.

Most folks I've met that do not like Elvis in most cases are relating to the myth, the Vegas figure, or the Elvis of the movies.
When I play them recordings of the Sun Records, and the best of his RCA recordings, they walk away feeling much different.
How could anyone who claims to love Rock music, and listen to Elvis' box set of "Fifties Masters" and not feel like they're on fire, and totally groove to it?
