Ok, so I bought this cd based on my immediate love for the Umbrella single and lo & behold - the album is solid all the way through!
There seems to be an eclectic mix of styles on the disc - which I love - and even the "confessional" song doesn't come off as lame as Rihanna talks about some fears, hopes, etc. Sometimes when my girl Mary J. Blige does that stuff I'm like - OK on to the next song - but Rihanna's voice is low and soft in the mix and shrouded by cool effects. There's a great song that kind of reminds me of M.I.A. a teensy bit. Shut Up & Drive sounds like something Shania Twain would've done about 10 years ago, but somehow even that works.
I'm actually suprized that I like it so much - all the way through. I was expecting a couple awesome singles and some filler for the rest but I am quite impressed. A great pop record, with cool beats and SO many hooks.
