Soul

So I am a huge fan of soul, its the reason I bought turntables.

I have been reading this book, "Last night a DJ saved my life", which documents the history of DJ'ing, and there is a section devoted to an original style of soul called northern soul.

Anybody else gotten into this yet? I have been downloading some stuff listed in the book, and I really like it.

      This site has some information:

      www.soulsurfin.currantbun.com/

and another one straight from the UK:

      www.northernsoul.co.uk/

I've never heard much that was recorded for the scene as such that didn't have a whiff of the retirement fund to it, but the movement revived quite a few fine, second-tier singles from the prime soul years and esp. toward the end of the golden era. Train-spotters inside the scene make too much of it, but they always do that.

Simply put, it's a term the originated in the UK and meant the soul music that was popular in the North. Sort of, more Stax than Motown. It is a style that has contiuned to have a degree of popularity in the UK, making enduring stars out of a lot of soul/R&B artists who were fairly obscure elsewhere. The term "Northern Soul" has nothing to do with the actual music, as the majority of it originated from the US up until UK musicians inlfluenced by it started popping up (Paul Weller, Edwyn Collins, etc) doing their own version of it.

Basically, it's what the Mods mainly listened to.

"Love on A Mountain Top" "There's A Ghost in my House" and others

"Theres A Ghost In My House" has got to be the coolest northern soul song I have heard yet.

I went to a Northern Soul night at the 100 club in London, which was pretty amazing and hilarious. They have made up their own dance, and although they clearly know all the songs, there is no attempt made to dance on the beat. If the dance is based on anything, it is based on the step-touch that the Temptations and the 4 Tops used to do. Occasionally, there is a backflip. It is a male-heavy kind of event. There were singles being bought and sold on the back wall. The DJ's only play singles, and they don't use headphones, just plop 'em down and let 'em roll, announcing each song beforehand. There was a tiny Mod crossover, some Vespas outside, etc, but mostly they were just...Soulies. An older crowd, very enthusiastic and VERY into the music, of course. The event started at 1 AM and carried on until 8 AM. I had to leave at 5 because my feet were sore from the dancin'.

And I've gotta read that book!

              Regards, Virginia
